Sunscald is a type of sunburn which occurs on windy, dry and sunny winter days so plants are unable to draw water from frozen soil of dry soil. Sunscald usually affects the evergreens. Sunscald is often occurred when plants are emerging from dormancy in early spring even tough plants damage can be occurred in the winter also.

You can protect evergreens by placing screens which are made of burlap sheeting on the southwest or shout sides of the evergreens since covering them is not recommended due to the cover can create more dehydration and trap winter sunlight. You can install the wooden stakes then staple burlap to the stakes. It’s recommended to install the stakes before the ground freezes in autumn. Don’t forget to provide some empty spaces at least 12 inches between plants and the screen. The screens should be slightly higher than the plants but if it is not possible then you may protect the base of the plants. As alternative you can use a reflective tree wrap.

You may use floating row covers which is made of garden fabric for row vegetable gardens. You can drape shade cover directly over plants such as cabbage or carrots.

You can make a simple screen using white sheets and place the screen above the plants or wherever can protect the plants from direct sun. Staple the white sheets to the wooden stakes. Just keep in your mind to provide some space above plants before the cover.

4. Old Window Screen
You can use sheets of lattice or old window screens as shade cover. The cover can be staked or propped on the southwest of south side of the plants.
