2. You can save money. Yes, you only need buy a couple of plants then propagate them using cutting method.

3. You can save time. Usually, if you grow tomatoes from seeds then seedlings process will take time around 6-8 weeks but if you grow tomatoes from cuttings then you will save time to only 10-14 days before transplantation time.

How to Grow Tomatoes from Cuttings


There are 2 ways to grow tomatoes from cuttings. First you can rooting tomato cutting in water then transplant it into growing medium. Second you can plant tomato cutting directly into growing / potting medium.

1. Cutting Process

For the best result, select the parent plant which is healthy and strong also give best production result. Cut the stem about 6-8 inches of the sucker or new stem growth at the tip of the branch. Remove any flower or buds and any excessive leaves from cuttings, you can leave only 2 leaves in cutting. Make sure to use sharp pruner and wipe it with alcohol or disinfectant solution before cutting.

2. Rooting Process

If you use water as rooting medium, simple just immerse the tomato stem cutting in water. Or you can grow tomatoes from cuttings directly into potting / growing medium. It is very fantastic if you try to root the tomato cutting in glass bottles since you can see the root growth time by time.

Rooting process using growing medium is also easy. You can use peat pot, vermiculite or plant it in garden directly. Just make a hole in growing medium, dip the tomato cutting into the hole and bury it. Keep the growing medium moist and place the plant in warm but not receive direct sunlight.

3. Transplantation

If you grow tomatoes from cuttings directly into growing medium then you don’t need to transplant them. But if you grow tomato in water then you will need to transplant them after the new plant is ready around a week. Now your new plant ready to be grown on large pot indoors or outdoors or at your garden.
