Gardening At Home - Composting provides us some benefits. It can recycle the
food and garden waste into something useful for the garden itself. I’m sure you
are already familiar with making compost outdoors, but how about making compost
indoors at home? Yes, composting can be done anywhere.
How to Make Compost Indoors?
There are some steps you can follow for making compost
indoors at home as follow:
First Step on Making Compost Indoors: Choosing a Composting
Vessel or Bioreactor
Here are some tips on choosing a suitable composting vessel
or bioreactor for making compost indoors:
- The composting vessel or bioreactor for making compost indoors should be much smaller than the outdoor bins and should be appropriately designed to provide the perfect conditions for aerobic, heat production. So it can support the breaking down of food waste.
- The bioreactor / composting vessel must have adequate heat retention, moisture, and air flow for decomposition of your organic materials when composting indoors.
You may use a 20-gallon garbage can bioreactor or worm bin
for making compost indoors. Using a worm bin for indoor composting is ideal especially
if you stay in apartment.
Second Step on Making Compost Indoors: Adding Organic
Materials
Almost organic materials can be added into composting bin.
You may put in it all food scraps or kitchen scraps with the exception of
bones, meats, oily fats, and dairy product. Meaty and dairy items will make bad
smell and attract rodents. Also you may
add fading cut flowers or other detritus from houseplants but keep in mind to keep
the same sizes of things you are tossing in the compost bin to facilitate the
decomposing process.
Third Step on Making Compost Indoors: Turning the Compost
Pile
Turning the compost pile on occasion will keep it aerated, so
it will speed up the decomposition process. By promoting rapid decomposition,
it will reduce the chance of a putrid stench noticed by your neighbors.
